As we head for the autumn, things are picking up on the cross-cultural scene! From now until next weekend, festivals and celebrations include the House of Chamorros Håfa Adai Festival at the international cottages, a Black August and Marcus Garvey Celebration at MLK Jr. Park, the San Diego Taiwan Festival at Liberty Station, and, on Sunday, the House of Panama Lawn Program. Lots and lots of music and events to enjoy this weekend and in the coming week including: Opera performance by Gabriella Rodmac, an Arabian Nights Dance Show, a Hungarian Music Tribute Concert, Marcus Garvey Day concert, a concert by vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, a Reggae Summer Fest in Oceanbeach, vocalist LuMaya, two shows at Humphreys by Anjelah Johnson-Reyes on Sunday, Sonidos Del Barrio event at Ceasar Chavez Park, and Brazilian Reggae artist Rafael Pondé at Winstons. The Chinese Museum and Historical Society continues its monthly Zoom talks with a talk by Huihan Lie, Founder and CEO of My China Roots (also the title of his talk). Movie goers will enjoy the San Diego International Children's Film Festival the Central Library, and the films Kwaidan and Tomorrow Somewhere by the Sea both at the Digital Gym. Next Wednesday, the classic film Spring in A Small Town will screen and be discussed at the Coronado Library, and next Thursday, the 25th LGBTQ Film Festival will get underway in Balboa Park. If books are your thing, Warwick’s will host Kim Fay who will discuss and signs copies her new book, Kate & Frida: A Novel of Friendship, Food, and Books. This Sunday, you can learn how to make Kimchi at the Maya Moon Collective Cafe. Todos Somos Migrantes, a local nonprofit that serves the migrant community, will hold a fundraiser on Sunday at El Cholo’s Kid in Chula Vista. Saturday and Sunday, the opera Madama Butterfly will be performed in Italian (with projected English subtitles) at the Star Theatre in Oceanside. Love Among the Ruins at PowerPAC wraps up on Sunday—hopefully there are a few tickets left. The Comedy of Errors continues at the Old Globe; the final performances are next weekend. Sunday, Filipino-American comedian Mikey Perry will host the Filipino comedy show Ube World at Mic Drop Comedy.
